Fielden Rye Whisky is a stunning English Rye Whisky made with heritage grains and using regenerative farming techniques. Good for the planet, great in the glass.

A floral, almost alpine nose with crumbly filo pastry, caramel and gently spiced hazelnut in the mouth. There is classic rye grain peppery spice on the finish with just a lick of fresh mint.

Ageing takes place in a combination of both new and used American oak. Then, about 20% to 25% of the blend is finished in wine barrels, such as late harvest white wines such as Sauternes and Ramandolo, or fortified white wines like Moscatel do Douro or Moscatel de Setúbal. Fielden also use Madeira wine barrels to mature their rye whisky.

About Fielden Whisky

Fielden, meaning "of the field" in Old English, represents a revolutionary approach to English whisky production. Founded on regenerative farming principles, they're bringing England's fields back to life by planting heritage grains that grew here centuries ago. Working with archaeobotanist John Letts, who has studied ancient cereals for 30 years, Fielden uses diverse heritage varieties grown in clover without chemicals. As nomadic distillers, they work with partners including Adnams, Yorkshire Distilling Company, and Wood Brothers Distillery, focusing on grain diversity and sustainable production. Their mission extends beyond making exceptional whisky - they're healing England's agricultural landscape whilst creating entirely new flavour profiles that showcase the potential of English terroir.

Understanding English Rye Whisky

English rye whisky represents one of the rarest categories in global spirits, with Fielden pioneering this virtually unknown style. Unlike American rye with its bold spice profile, European rye traditions emphasise softer, more floral characteristics that showcase grain complexity rather than aggressive heat. Fielden's approach using heritage grains creates unprecedented flavour diversity - each variety contributes unique characteristics that have been naturally selected over centuries. The regenerative farming method, using clover as living fertiliser, creates soil biodiversity that translates directly into whisky complexity. This represents not just innovation in distilling, but a complete reimagining of how grain, soil, and spirit can work together to create expressions impossible anywhere else in the world.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What makes English rye whisky different from American rye?

A: English rye, particularly Fielden's heritage grain approach, creates softer, more floral profiles compared to American rye's bold spice. The European style emphasises grain complexity over aggressive heat, showcasing terroir and farming methods.

Q: What does "regenerative farming" mean for whisky flavour?

A: Regenerative farming uses diverse heritage grains grown in living clover without chemicals. This creates soil biodiversity that translates to grain complexity, producing flavours impossible through industrial agriculture - essentially, healthier soil creates more flavourful whisky.

Q: Is this suitable for rye whisky beginners?

A: Yes! Fielden's European rye style is much more approachable than American rye whisky. The floral, fruity character with soft spice makes it perfect for exploring rye without overwhelming heat.

Q: How does heritage grain whisky differ from standard whisky?

A: Heritage grains are ancient varieties that naturally adapted over centuries, creating unique flavour compounds lost in modern industrial grain. Each heritage variety contributes distinct characteristics, making every Fielden expression a discovery of forgotten English flavours.
