Go behind the scenes at Ad Gefrin, the family-founded distillery that re-awakened Northumberland's whisky-making tradition after a sleep of more than 200 years. On this 90-minute guided tour you'll follow the journey from locally grown malt through mashing, fermentation and distillation to the cask store, before finishing in the tasting room with a guided tasting of Ad Gefrin spirits, led by their resident Alchemists.

Your ticket also includes entry to Ad Gefrin's award-winning Anglo-Saxon Museum and Great Hall, an immersive celebration of Northumberland's Golden Age, making this a full day out in Wooler, at the gateway to the Cheviot Hills.

Designated drivers are well looked after with drams to take home, and under-18s (ages 8-17, accompanied by an adult) receive non-alcoholic alternatives at the tasting.

After booking, you will receive your ticket/s by email with simple instructions for choosing your tour date and time.

What Else to Do Nearby

Ad Gefrin sits in Wooler, a market town on the edge of Northumberland National Park known as the Gateway to the Cheviots. It is easy to build a full day, or a whole weekend, around your distillery tour: castles, dark-sky stargazing and proper walking country all lie within a short drive.

Walkers do especially well here. Harthope Valley climbs from the town towards The Cheviot, the highest point in Northumberland, while the quieter College Valley offers riverside and woodland routes where you may well have the path to yourself. St Cuthbert's Way, the long-distance route linking Melrose with Lindisfarne, passes close to Wooler and makes a rewarding day walk in either direction.

If the Anglo-Saxon royal court of Gefrin, the summer palace that gives the distillery its name, has caught your imagination, three castles lie within easy reach of Wooler. Chillingham is famous for its ghost stories and wild cattle, while Etal and Ford tell the story of centuries of border conflict between England and Scotland.

Northumberland National Park also holds some of the darkest skies in Europe, so a clear evening is worth planning around if you are staying overnight. For seasonal events and markets in Wooler and Glendale, the Glendale Gateway Trust keeps an up-to-date what's-on guide, and Ad Gefrin's own journal on Wooler's hidden heritage is a good read before you visit.
