The English Distillery Wine Cask Matured Whisky, 70cl

The first release from their Small Batch range in 2025, this is a wonderful marriage of four second-fill wine casks. A second fill cask gives slightly less colour but a very gentle malt, and this smooth, gentle whisky is a perfect example.

Nose: Cocoa, praline, black cherries, citrus peel, apricots, almonds, slight tobacco and soft toffee. A little water and the fruits become more pronounced
Palate: This gentle palate reminds us of dried fruits and buttery shortbread
Finish: A lovely, smooth, fruity finish. Not too short and not too long

The English Distillery already limits batch sizes to ensure that every whisky made is exceptional, but The English Small Batch range takes it to the next level. These limited releases showcase the expertise of their distillery team in using various techniques to bring out the depth of flavours in our exceptional stocks of single malt whiskies. The English Distillery uses slow processes, traditional equipment and honest, local ingredients. James Nelstrop's original goal for the distillery was to create England's finest single-malt whisky. Pure Breckland water is drawn from the spring underneath the distillery and the barley is sourced locally.

The Distillery
In 2005, co-founder James Nelstrop decided to make a life-long dream a reality and submitted a planning application for England’s first whisky distillery in over 100 years. It was officially opened in the summer of 2007 by his Majesty King Charles III. Iain Henderson, a renowned distiller formerly at Laphroaig, led the distillation of the first whisky. The business is now led by James Nelstrop’s son Andrew who is building a legacy of exemplary English whisky with approachable, world class spirits.
