Retribution Distilling Single Malt English Whisky PR007, Peated PX Octave, 70cl
PR007 is Retribution Distilling's seventh release, and the first time the Somerset distillery has filled PX octaves that previously held peated whisky. The two casks (W025 and W026) first matured Loch Lomond Distillery's peated Inchfad; Retribution then filled them with its own new make in August 2023. The result is a sherry-cask English single malt with a thread of smoke running through it.
The nose opens with Pedro Ximénez sherry, dark dried fruit and a hint of smoke and burnt leather. On the palate there is more dark dried fruit, gentle smoke and a subtle sweetness from the PX, before a warming finish where the smoke lingers. Octaves are small casks, so the spirit has close contact with the wood, and the PX and peat influence is pronounced for a whisky of just over three years in cask.
The spirit is made from Maris Otter barley malted at Warminster Maltings, fermented for 7 to 14 days with an English ale yeast and distilled in a direct-fired copper pot still in July 2023. It was filled on 23 August 2023, emptied from cask on 14 September 2026 and bottled on 6 October 2026. The batch is 162 bottles; this bottling is at 52% Alc., the strength that Head Distiller Rich prefers.
At 52% Alc., add a splash of water; it opens up the dried fruit and PX sweetness. We think PR007 will appeal most to drinkers who like a rich, sherry-led whisky and enjoy some smoke alongside it, rather than a heavily peated dram.
Retribution Distilling is a small distillery in Frome, Somerset, founded by Rich Lock. Each whisky release is a small batch from one or a handful of casks, numbered in sequence, so every bottling has its own character.
