Wire Works Caduro X marks ten years of production at White Peak Distillery. Rather than a straightforward anniversary bottling, the team have used the occasion to push their house style somewhere it hasn't been before.

The starting point is their core Caduro expression: a vatting of first-fill ex-bourbon barrels and STR (shaved, toasted, and re-charred) ex-red wine casks, lightly peated, and built around orchard and tropical fruit. For Caduro X, White Peak have added spirit from alternate distillation cut points alongside the standard distillate. The alt-cut spirit carries a brighter, more tropical character and a subtler uptick in peat; vatting the two together extends the range of flavours in the finished whisky. To proof it down to 46.8% Alc., they used their "special waters" technique: low-strength spirit matured in oak casks, which carries water-soluble flavours that plain water cannot. The result is a whisky with more textural depth than the % strength would suggest.

Tasting Notes: banoffee pie, egg custard tarts, and baked apple on the nose with orange zest and a soft thread of peat. The palate brings cinnamon rolls, pineapple cubes, milk chocolate, and marmalade. The finish is cinder toffee, candied ginger, honey, and a breath of wood smoke. Natural colour, non-chill filtered.

White Peak was founded in 2016 by Max and Claire Vaughan in Ambergate, Derbyshire, at the restored 19th-century Johnson and Nephew Wire Works on the River Derwent. One of England's most decorated distilleries; 1,000 bottles of Caduro X were produced.

What Makes Caduro X Distinctive

  • A decade in one bottle: Caduro X draws on ten years of accumulated knowledge at White Peak; every production decision reflects something the team learned along the way, from fermentation through distillation to vatting.
  • Alt-cut distillation: By taking spirit from alternate distillation cut points, the team has pushed Caduro X towards a brighter, more tropical fruit character with a subtle uptick in peat versus the core Caduro expression.
  • Special waters technique: Rather than proofing down with plain water, White Peak matured low-strength spirit in oak casks to extract water-soluble flavours and textures unavailable at higher strength. It is an unusual step that adds real textural depth to the finished whisky.
  • STR casks: White Peak's signature shaved, toasted, and re-charred ex-red wine barriques contribute fruit, spice, and structure. The combination of STR and ex-bourbon casks is the house style; Caduro X refines and extends it.
  • UNESCO World Heritage Site location: White Peak operates from the restored 19th-century Johnson and Nephew Wire Works in Ambergate, a site on the banks of the River Derwent that forms part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.
  • Award-winning distillery: White Peak has won more than 25 awards, including Whisky of the Year 2026 from The Whisky Exchange and Best World Whisky 2025 at the Online Scotch Whisky Awards.

About White Peak Distillery

White Peak was founded in 2016 by Max and Claire Vaughan in Ambergate, Derbyshire. The couple restored the former Johnson and Nephew Wire Works, a 19th-century copper wire factory on the banks of the River Derwent, and built it into one of England's most respected whisky distilleries. Their approach from the start has been methodical and hands-on; every stage of production, from mashing and fermentation through distillation and maturation, is explored and refined on site. Wire Works whisky carries that story; the name is not a brand conceit but a direct reference to the building where every bottle begins.

Alt-Cut Distillation and Special Waters Explained

Most distilleries use the same cut points for every distillation run, taking spirit from a consistent section of the distillation to establish a house style. White Peak's alt-cut approach uses different cut points to capture a distinct range of flavours; the resulting spirit is brighter and more tropical than the standard cut, making it a useful counterpoint in a vatting. The special waters technique takes this further: by maturing low-strength spirit in oak casks before using it to proof the whisky down to bottling strength, White Peak introduces a layer of water-soluble flavour compounds that would otherwise be inaccessible. The result is a whisky with more textural complexity than its 46.8% Alc. would suggest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is Wire Works Caduro X and how does it differ from regular Caduro?

A: Caduro X is a limited-edition anniversary release built on the same cask foundation as the core Caduro expression: first-fill ex-bourbon barrels and STR ex-red wine casks. The differences are in the spirit itself. Caduro X incorporates alt-cut distillate alongside the standard cut, pushing the profile towards brighter tropical fruit and a slightly peatier character. The special waters proofing technique also adds textural depth not present in the standard release. Only 1,000 bottles were produced.

Q: What does "alt-cut" mean in whisky production?

A: During distillation, the stillman makes a series of cuts to separate different sections of the distillate. The standard cut captures the flavours that define the house style. An alt-cut uses different cut points to collect a different range of compounds; typically brighter, fruitier, and in White Peak's case, slightly more tropical and peaty than the standard distillate. Vatting both together adds complexity and range to the finished whisky.

Q: What is the "special waters" technique?

A: When whisky is reduced from cask strength to bottling strength, distilleries typically add plain water. White Peak's special waters approach is different: they mature low-strength spirit in oak casks first, so the water used for proofing carries its own range of wood-derived, water-soluble flavours and textures. These compounds are not present in high-strength spirit, so this technique adds a layer of complexity that proofing with plain water would not.

Q: Is Wire Works Caduro X still available?

A: We carry stock at Digital Distiller; check the page for current availability. With only 1,000 bottles produced globally and the release now several weeks old, remaining stock across all retailers is limited. If you are considering it, we would not wait.

Q: Where is White Peak Distillery located?

A: White Peak Distillery is in Ambergate, Derbyshire, in the Peak District area. The distillery occupies the restored 19th-century Johnson and Nephew Wire Works on the banks of the River Derwent, a site that forms part of the Derwent Valley Mills UNESCO World Heritage Site. The distillery is open to visitors and runs regular tours.
