The Meaning of Flýte
Flýte takes its name from the Old English verb 'Flýtan,' meaning a ritual poetic exchange of boasts. In Anglo-Saxon England, this was a highly stylised verbal duel performed before an audience in the great feasting hall at royal gatherings. Participants would exchange clever, poetic boasts in a form of entertainment, with the winner and guests drinking to their victory.
This tradition can be seen as a precursor to modern debate, rap battles, or toasting. The noun 'Flýte' also means cream in Old English, making it the perfect name for a rich cream liqueur crafted to be enjoyed in celebration and shared gatherings, just as it would have been in Anglo-Saxon feasting halls over 1,400 years ago.
About Ad Gefrin Distillery
Ad Gefrin opened in March 2023 in Wooler, Northumberland, re-establishing whisky distilling in an area that hasn't seen the practice for over 200 years. Founded by Alan and Eileen Ferguson, the distillery is part of an ambitious Anglo-Saxon heritage museum showcasing archaeology and artefacts from the North East's golden age.
The distillery sits in the heart of some of the finest barley-producing country in the world, with five named local farmers growing exclusively for Ad Gefrin. Pure Cheviot water is pumped from beneath the distillery, providing the foundation for their award-winning spirits. The facility was named North East Building of the Year 2025.
Ad Gefrin's aim is to celebrate and showcase the unique heritage, ancient hospitality, and contemporary crafts of Northumberland. Their spirits, made for sharing, are designed to be central to life's meaningful moments, echoing the Anglo-Saxon tradition of communal feasting and celebration.
The TĂĄcnbora Whisky Base
Flýte is made with Tåcnbora, Ad Gefrin's flagship blended whisky. The name means 'Standard Bearer' in Old English, referring to the writings of Bede which recorded that in the 7th century, King Edwin was always preceded by a standard bearer carrying a staff topped with a goat's head. This shape has become Ad Gefrin's logo.
Tåcnbora is made with Northumberland-grown barley from local farming partners and pure Cheviot water. The whisky provides the backbone of Flýte, contributing gentle warmth, toasted oak notes, and the authentic English whisky character that sets this cream liqueur apart from Irish and Scottish alternatives.
Visit Ad Gefrin
Ad Gefrin welcomes visitors daily from 10am to 5pm. The site includes an Anglo-Saxon museum (the Great Hall), a distillery offering tours and tastings, BÄodern bistro featuring local seasonal produce, and a unique gift shop with locally made products.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How does Flýte compare to Baileys Irish Cream?
A: Flýte is made with English whisky rather than Irish whisky, giving it a distinctive Northumberland character. It emphasises toffee and salted caramel notes over chocolate, and showcases the unique profile of Tåcnbora blended whisky made with local barley and Cheviot water.
Q: Does this need to be refrigerated?
A: Once opened, store Flýte in a cool, dark place and consume within one year. Refrigeration is recommended for best quality but not essential due to the alcohol content.
Q: Is this suitable as a Christmas gift?
A: Absolutely. Flýte was specifically designed to capture the essence of Yuletide festivities and makes an excellent festive gift for whisky or cream liqueur lovers.
Q: What makes this different from Scottish cream liqueurs?
A: Flýte uses English whisky from Northumberland with local barley and Cheviot water. It represents England's northernmost whisky distillery and carries Anglo-Saxon heritage rather than Scottish traditions.
Q: Can I use this in cocktails?
A: Yes, Flýte works beautifully in coffee-based cocktails, can replace Baileys in any recipe, and adds a unique English twist to classic cream liqueur cocktails.
Q: What does Anglo-Saxon heritage mean for this product?
A: Ad Gefrin is built on the site of an Anglo-Saxon royal settlement. The product names, museum, and overall philosophy draw from this 7th-century Northumbrian heritage, celebrating the region's golden age.
