How to Choose the Perfect Whisky for Your Dad
Start With What He Already Drinks
The easiest shortcut to a good gift is what's already in his cupboard. If he drinks Scotch single malt, you already have the clearest steer you could ask for. If he tends towards bourbon, that tells you something too. And if he's never really been a whisky drinker at all, that's actually a perfectly good opportunity to introduce him to something approachable and genuinely interesting.
Here's a simple starting framework:
He drinks Scotch single malt (unpeated, like Glenfiddich or Dalwhinnie): look for a clean, fruit-forward English single malt. Bourbon cask maturation tends to produce the most familiar style here.
He drinks Scotch single malt (heavily peated, like Laphroaig or Ardbeg): he may enjoy a peated English expression, though the style tends to be gentler. More on that below.
He drinks bourbon: it's worth knowing that English whisky matured in ex-bourbon casks isn't the same as bourbon, and won't taste identical. What ex-bourbon casks do contribute is a sweetness, vanilla and honey character that bourbon drinkers tend to find appealing. New or virgin oak maturation can add a similar quality. A rye whisky is also worth considering for a bourbon drinker who'd enjoy something a little spicier and drier.
He's not much of a whisky drinker: start with something lighter, fruit-forward and not too high in strength. You're looking for a gentle introduction, not a challenge.

The Flavour Map: Four Styles Worth Knowing
Whisky mostly tastes like whisky. That sounds obvious, but it's worth saying: most English single malts share a warm, malty, slightly sweet character that will feel familiar to anyone who has enjoyed a dram before. The differences between bottles are usually a matter of degree rather than category.
The main variables worth understanding are cask influence and grain.
Bourbon cask: tends to produce lighter, sweeter whiskies. Think vanilla, honey, orchard fruit and a gentle malt note. Often the most accessible style, and a good first port of call for dads who drink Scotch but haven't explored English whisky.
STR and wine casks: STR stands for shaved, toasted and re-charred. These casks, typically ex-red wine, add layers of red berries, a gentle spice and a little more structure. A popular style in English whisky, where several distilleries use it as a core part of their house character.
Sherry and rich casks: deeper, more intense. Dried fruit, baking spice, dark chocolate, sometimes a hint of coffee. A step up in richness; a good match for dads who like something they can sit with slowly.
Rye grain: less common in England, but genuinely interesting. Rye naturally produces spicier, drier whiskies than barley; expect cinnamon, fresh pepper and a firmer texture. A good pick for dads who find standard single malts a little soft or sweet, or who enjoy something with more edge to it.
Our Picks by Flavour Profile
Rather than overwhelming you with a list, here are specific bottles matched to the profiles above. All are available from Digital Distiller.
For the fan of classic, well-rounded single malt
Cotswolds Bourbon Cask Single Malt is built entirely from first-fill ex-bourbon barrels, using 100% locally grown, floor-malted Cotswold barley. The result is a whisky with plenty of vanilla custard, warm honey and orchard fruit sitting underneath. It's bottled at cask strength (59.1% Alc.), so a small splash of water can open it up nicely. A reliable, well-made bottle for dads who appreciate quality without wanting to stray too far from what they know.
Filey Bay STR Red Wine Cask from Spirit of Yorkshire starts life in ex-bourbon casks, then finishes in STR ex-Rioja wine casks, which add red berries, a hint of caramelised orange and a soft spice to the base spirit. Light and floral in character, this is an easy whisky to enjoy and an easy one to give. Spirit of Yorkshire grow their own barley on the family farm, so there's a genuine farm-to-bottle story here that makes it a nice talking point too.
For the dad who likes something richer
The Lakes Whiskymaker's Reserve No. 5 is matured in a combination of oloroso, Pedro Ximénez and red wine casks, and it shows: rich orchard and dried fruit, baking spice, a hint of dark chocolate and a long, warming finish. At 52% Alc. it has real weight but remains well-balanced; it's the kind of bottle that rewards slow sipping. The Lakes Distillery is one of the most established names in English whisky and this is a strong example of their sherry-led house style.
For the curious dad who wants something a little different
Wire Works Caduro X is a limited anniversary release from White Peak Distillery in Derbyshire, built on first-fill ex-bourbon and STR ex-red wine casks. It carries banoffee pie and baked orchard fruit on the nose, with tropical fruit and cinnamon spice on the palate and a soft thread of wood smoke in the finish. It is only lightly peated; the smoke sits in the background rather than leading. With just 1,000 bottles produced, this is a bottle that feels like a proper find.
For the dad who's already a whisky geek
Fielden Harvest 2019 Rye Whisky is made from heritage rye grain grown regeneratively, without chemicals or pesticides, from diverse populations of grain that adapt naturally year on year. The 2019 harvest was particularly mild and wet, producing a rye that is fresher and more delicate than many in the category: floral, with stone fruit, fresh ginger and soft pastry notes, finishing with a pinch of white pepper and thyme. It is bottled at 50% Alc. and is unlike almost anything else available in English whisky. If your dad is the kind of person who enjoys knowing exactly where his whisky comes from and why it tastes the way it does, this is the bottle for him.
A Note on Smoky Whiskies
Smoke divides opinion more than almost anything else in whisky. Some drinkers love it; others find it hard to get past. If your dad is a committed peat fan who keeps a bottle of heavily smoked Scotch for a reason, he may well enjoy one of the peated English options. If he's indifferent to smoke, or hasn't mentioned it, it's generally safer to choose an unpeated bottle.
When English distilleries produce peated whisky, they tend to produce something gentler and more integrated than the classic Islay style. The smoke is present, but it sits alongside the other flavours rather than dominating them.
Ludlow Islay Peated Cask uses a quarter cask previously holding Islay peated Scotch to finish a fruity, butterscotch-led base spirit. The smoke is genuine but measured; there's still plenty of sweetness underneath. A good choice for a dad who enjoys peated whisky but appreciates some balance alongside it.
Henstone Ex-Peated Cask takes a different route: aged first in ex-bourbon casks, then transferred to an ex-peated Islay cask to introduce a layer of smoke without building the spirit from peated grain. The smoke here is a background note, not the whole story.
If you are in any doubt, leave the smoky bottles for another time. A well-chosen unpeated whisky is a more reliable gift for someone whose peat preferences you don't know well.
